Plumbing Helper Job Description

SUMMARY

Responsible for assisting plumber at homes and residences. Helps install, repair, and maintain pipes used for water distribution and wastewater disposal.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist in installing and maintaining plumbing systems.
Read blueprints and drawings to determine exact specifications and where plumbing system will be installed.
Determine water supply networks and waste drainage systems.
Coordinate with project manager on installation.
Install systems used to transport water, waste, gases, or liquids.
Ensure legislation and policies are met and that systems are up to code.
Ensure systems meet all standards of building codes and safety.
Cut openings in structures in preparation for pipes.
Select all materials needed for installation, including type and size of pipe. 
Install supports and hangers for pipe, fixtures and equipment.
Assemble and install valves and fittings.
Assemble pipe sections, tubing and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing and welding equipment.
Install other plumbing equipment, such as sinks, tubs, toilets, water heaters, air conditioners, appliances, and trim.
Measure, cut, thread, and bend pipe to required angle
Observe pressure gauges to fix leaks.
Test pipe systems and fix leaks.
Repair and maintain water treatment equipment.
Perform scheduled maintenance.
Ensure all installations, repairs and maintenance are properly sized, aligned, supported and grade.


Job Qualifications:

· High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) preferred but not required and/or one or two years related experience
· Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
· Ability to demonstrate conduct conforming to a set of values and accepted standards.
· Ability to make decisions or take actions to solve a problem.
· Ability to stand & walk, reach outward constantly, lift/carry up to 60 lbs.
· Frequent handling/fingering, reaching above shoulders, crawling, squatting, kneeling, bending.
· May have to work at a height.

SUMMARY

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assemble, install, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes.
Assemble pipe sections, tubing and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing and welding equipment.
Fill pipes or plumbing fixtures with water or air and observe pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks.
Study building plans and inspect structures to assess material and equipment needs, to establish the sequence of pipe installations, and to plan installation around obstructions such as electrical wiring.
Perform complex calculations and planning for special or very large jobs.
Locate and mark the position of pipe installations, connections, passage holes, and fixtures in structures, using measuring instruments such as rulers and levels.
Measure, cut, thread, and bend pipe to required angle, using hand and power tools or machines suet as pipe cutters, pipe-threading machines, and pipe-bending machines.
Install pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, appliances such as dishwashers and water heaters, and fixtures such as sinks and toilets, using hand and power tools.
Cut openings in structures to accommodate pipes and pipe fittings, using hand and power tools.
Hang steel supports from ceiling joists to hold pipes in place.
Review blueprints and building codes and specifications to determine work details and procedures.
Repair and maintain plumbing, replacing defective washers, replacing or mending broken pipes, and opening clogged drains.
Direct workers engaged in pipe cutting and preassembly and installation of plumbing systems and components.
Install underground storm, sanitary and water piping systems and extend piping to connect fixtures and plumbing to these
Clear away debris in a renovation
